File extension doc information

Description: Files with the .doc extension normally reference a document or a documentation file created with a word processing application. Although not considered as a proprietary format, the .doc file extension is more commonly associated with the Microsoft Word software application, which is probably due to its popularity and widespread deployment. However, there are wide varieties of word processing programs (both commercial and free) that are capable of creating the .doc file extension as well as an equally numerous number of document viewers capable of reading the format type.

The file extension .doc electronic document format was historically utilized for the documentation process, which involved plain text files related to computer programs and hardware components regardless of the operating system used by the machine. The file extension .doc became the format of choice and the default format used by the WordPerfect program, which was considered as the de facto standard for word processors in the 1980s and served as the predecessor for many of today's similar programs including Microsoft Word.
